DeepScribe

A specialty-tuned ambient AI scribe with the highest KLAS spotlight score in the category and a dominant share of U.S. oncology visits. The right commercial reference when the deciding factor is specialty depth — particularly oncology, cardiology, urology, and orthopedics — and when the buyer wants transparent per-provider pricing rather than a seven-figure enterprise contract.

Clinicians at Ochsner Health (46 hospitals, 370+ urgent-care and clinic locations across the Gulf South), live under an enterprise-wide DeepScribe agreement.

After-hours docs
−75%

Reduction in after-hours EHR documentation reported by Covenant HealthCare clinicians. Vendor case study; treat as upper-bound.

What DeepScribe actually does

DeepScribe is an ambient documentation product positioned around specialty depth rather than horizontal coverage. The product captures audio in real time, transcribes and structures the encounter, and writes a draft note back into the EHR. What sets it apart is the specialty layer on top: oncology workflows that pull tumor staging and treatment history forward, cardiology workflows that surface relevant studies, urology workflows that respect the procedure-heavy note structure, and so on. Each specialty has its own templates and its own context-pull behavior.

SURFACE 01
Ambient note generation

Real-time transcription and structured note synthesis, written to the EHR within seconds of the encounter ending. Vendor reports 98% transcription accuracy and ~1.6-minute average chart-close time.

SURFACE 02
AI Coding (E/M, HCC, ICD-10)

Coding suggestions in line with the encounter, supporting accurate billing and value-based contracts. CPT, E/M, HCC, and ICD-10 coverage.

SURFACE 03
Pre-charting + context pull

Pulls past notes, labs, imaging, medications, and diagnoses forward into the current visit's draft. Reduces the "look up the chart, then write the note" cycle.

SURFACE 04
DeepScribe Assist

Real-time clinical insights surfaced inside the encounter: documentation prompts, coding hints, and adherence to specialty-specific templates as the visit unfolds.

Deployment posture

Cloud-only commercial SaaS, but with a more practice-friendly distribution than Abridge or Ambience: the iOS app (iPhone + iPad) means a small specialty group can adopt it without bespoke EHR integration work, and the AWS Marketplace listing makes procurement portable for AWS-spending health systems.

SURFACE
In-EHR + iOS

Bidirectional Epic integration including Haiku and Canto. athenahealth and eClinicalWorks supported with specialty depth. iOS app for clinicians outside enterprise EHR rollouts.

DATA PATH
Cloud-only inference

Processing happens in DeepScribe's HIPAA-secure cloud. End-to-end AES-256 encryption. SOC 2 certified. Standard BAA.

PROCUREMENT
Direct or AWS Marketplace

Procurable through AWS Marketplace. Per-provider monthly pricing typically reported in the $350–$500 range — a rare instance of public price-band transparency in this category.

FOOTPRINT
From solo specialists to systems

Sells across the size spectrum: small specialty practices on iOS, mid-sized groups on direct contracts, large systems on enterprise agreements like Ochsner.

The evidence base

DeepScribe leans heavily on KLAS recognition and named-customer case studies. Peer-reviewed clinical evidence is thinner than Abridge's but the third-party validation pattern is strong:

  • checkKLAS spotlight 98.8 — highest in the ambient-AI scribe category. A+ marks across adoption, efficiency, and clinician satisfaction. Three KLAS Emerging Solutions Top 20 awards in 2025.
  • checkOchsner Health enterprise deployment — 4,700 clinicians across 46 hospitals and 370+ care locations. The largest single-system DeepScribe deployment to date.
  • checkOncology coverage — vendor estimates that DeepScribe sees ~40% of all U.S. cancer visits, anchored by Texas Oncology and other specialty-care customers.
  • checkCovenant HealthCare case study — 75% reduction in after-hours documentation reported by clinicians on the platform. Vendor-published; not peer-reviewed.
  • closeIndependent peer-reviewed RCTs are not the strong suit. If a buyer's evaluation rubric weights peer-reviewed evidence heavily, Abridge and Nabla have stronger published studies.

Privacy and compliance posture

DeepScribe is HIPAA-compliant and SOC 2-certified, signs a BAA, and encrypts data end-to-end with AES-256. The privacy program also includes de-identification flows, MFA on customer accounts, internal access controls, and physical-security controls on the data centers. The Trust and Safety page is unusually detailed for a vendor of this size.

The deployment posture is the same constraint as the rest of the cloud-scribe field: encounter audio leaves the customer's network. For a U.S. specialty practice or a system that already procures from AWS Marketplace, that is the standard model. For a Canadian provincial setting under PHIPA / HIA / Law 25 with strict residency interpretations, the cloud path remains the binding constraint.

Strengths and limitations, plainly

STRENGTHS
Where DeepScribe wins

Specialty depth — particularly oncology, where it is the category leader. Highest KLAS spotlight score in ambient AI. Transparent monthly per-provider pricing — accessible to specialty groups, not just enterprise systems. AWS Marketplace procurement. Bidirectional Epic integration including Haiku and Canto. iOS surface for low-friction adoption.

LIMITATIONS
Where it does not fit

Cloud-only, like its competitors. Enterprise scale is smaller than Abridge or Ambience — fewer marquee tier-1 academic medical centers in the customer roster. Peer-reviewed evidence base is thinner. Funding scale is smaller too ($61M total raised), which is fine commercially but worth weighing against Abridge's $1B+ on capital-runway grounds.

Where DeepScribe fits versus an on-prem alternative

DimensionDeepScribe (cloud SaaS)On-prem (WalledCare)
Sweet spot Specialty practices and systems with deep oncology / cardiology / urology workflows. Hospitals whose constraint is data residency or multi-app on-prem stack (scribe + discharge + handoff + Q&A).
Pricing ~$350–$500 per provider per month, transparent. Capex + ops; predictable past year one, no per-seat ramp.
Procurement Direct or via AWS Marketplace. Capital purchase + services contract.
Data residency Cloud. Audio and transcripts leave the network. Inside the hospital data center; no outbound API.
Specialty depth Best-in-class for oncology and other procedure-heavy specialties. Built per customer; specialty depth is a function of the configuration phase.
Adoption surface iOS app + Epic Haiku/Canto + bidirectional integrations. Web portal + EHR sidecar via HL7/FHIR.

DeepScribe is the cleanest answer for a specialty group on Epic or athena that wants ambient documentation now, with transparent pricing and no enterprise-sales cycle. The on-prem alternative is the right call only when residency or a multi-app local stack is the constraint.

Where this fits in the WalledCare directory

DeepScribe is the strongest reference for the specialty-care and mid-market framings of AI Scribes. If you are an oncology, cardiology, or surgical group on Epic or athenahealth and the deciding factor is "best note quality in our specialty, fastest path to value, transparent pricing," DeepScribe should be on the shortlist alongside Abridge and Ambience. If the deciding factor is on-prem residency, read our on-prem reference stack instead.

Use DeepScribe as the benchmark, then decide

If your specialty workflow is the deciding factor and your team is OK with a cloud BAA, DeepScribe earns a slot on the shortlist. If your binding constraint is residency or a multi-application on-prem stack, WalledCare is the alternative built for that.
